Houseplants that clean the air

Plants add beauty to our homes and they make us feel good. A few foliage improve our mood at home as well as the air we breathe. Indoor plants not only make us feel better emotionally, they restore life-sustaining oxygen to the air.

Plants that carry a lot of water from the root to the leaves where it evaporates are those that you want to use to clean the air.

Did you know that several plants were studied by NASA, along with later studies on indoor air quality and proved that they have the ability to reduce toxic chemicals from tainted indoor air. Plants in your home or office can remove toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, toulene and ammonia that comes from the everyday stuff we use in our homes and offices. Many of these chemicals are released causing respiratory and allergic reactions. So where are these chemicals coming from?

List of chemicals and where they come from.

Ammonia - cleaning products, photocopiers and carpeting

Benzene - photocopiers, paints, stains, varnishes, wall coverings, ceiling tiles, tobacco smoke.

Formaldehyde - upholsteries, floor coverings, fabrics, adhesives, grocery bags, paints, stains, varnishes.

Trichlorethylene - photocopiers, printers.

Xylene and toluene - adhesives, caulking, printers, photocopiers, paints, stains, varnishes, wall coverings.
